Keeping Your Phone Charged While Travelling - Telegraph

James Marshall writes

I'm going to be away from a power source while travelling. What can I pack so that I can still use my phone?

Donald Strachan, technology expert, replies

You will be lucky to get more than a day's use out of most smartphones. Their screens and processors eat power, even if you take preventive measures such as switching off the 3G signal.

A good idea is to pack a pre-charged battery booster. The Energenie ChargeGenie (£25; from

energenie4u.co.uk

), for example, has a 1400mAh power capacity that will enable an extra day's careful smartphone use. It is compatible with devices that charge via a micro-USB - so most Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry handsets - and has a malleable gel back which allows it to clamp on as it charges.

Slightly smaller is the Innergie Pocketcell (£60; from

amazon.co.uk

), a 3.5-inch (9cm) rechargeable power bank with a 4-in-1 attachment for a standard, mini or micro USB, or an Apple connector. It stores 3,000mAh of emergency power, enough to charge two or three devices in your kit bag.

If you can wait, the new PocketCell Duo (£99; from

myinnergie.com

) stores double the juice of the current model and can charge two devices at once, but it won't be available for a month or so.

If you're going to be in the wild for a long spell, I'd suggest that you ditch the smartphone altogether. As Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at uSwitch.com, points out, "as feature-packed and hi-tech as touch-screen smart- phones are these days, it's the stalwart mobile that will stand you in good stead when it comes to battery life. Nokia came out top for battery life at the uSwitch.com mobile awards last year," he continues. "The bargain Nokia 100 has a 1.8-inch colour display, FM radio and over 600 hours of standby battery life, as opposed to 225 hours for the iPhone 5." The Nokia model costs £4.95 plus £10 top up from carphone warehouse.com on pay-as-you-go.

Alternatively, think about a SpareOne Emergency Phone (£45; from

firebox.com

), a combined basic mobile and torch that runs off one AA battery. For the same reason you should swap your tablet for an eReader, such as the Kobo Glo (£99; from

whsmith.co.uk

). Its battery will typically last a month without a recharge, and it also has a basic web browser that works over Wi-Fi.

The most dependable power source for all your gadgets is the sun. Portable solar cells require only daylight to charge. The Solarpod Buddy (£25; from

power-on-demand.co.uk

) is an iPod-sized cell that will charge any small device with a standard connector. For more power, the Crosskase Solar 15 (£140; from

crosskase.com

) is a 25-litre rucksack with a three-watt solar panel. It charges a battery you can connect to almost any portable gadget, including GPS navigation devices.

Also perfect for anyone "going bush" for a long stint is the BioLite (£150; from

cotswoldoutdoor.com

). This small camping stove has a thermoelectric generator, which converts the heat generated by the stove into electricity and powers a USB outlet to charge devices. And you won't need to use up a drop of that power to make yourself a proper campfire coffee. The lightweight AeroPress Coffee Maker (£30; from

firebox.com

) makes an excellent double espresso - and no fiddling with USB ports.

The United States Successfully Tested a Solar Panel in Space
Photovoltaic power generation has become an important part of new energy power generation in the world. The next goal of the United States is to challenge solar power generation from space and send it back to Earth. Now an important step has been taken.According to reports, researchers at the Pentagon in the United States have successfully tested a solar panel in space a few days ago, measuring 12x12 inches, about the size of a pizza box. This solar panel is called Photovoltaic Radio Frequency Antenna Module (PRAM). It was launched for the first time in May 2020. It is installed on the Pentagon’s X-37B drone and uses light from the sun to convert it into electricity. This drone circulates over the earth every 90 minutes. There is also solar energy on the earth's surface. The reason why it takes so much time to obtain solar energy in space is because the light from space cannot pass through the atmosphere, so the energy of the blue waves is preserved, and the power generation efficiency will be higher.According to Paul Jaffe, the co-developer of the project, the test was a success. The 12x12-inch solar panel successfully generated about 10W of energy, enough to drive a tablet computer.Researchers are currently looking for ways to expand the scale of solar panels. If the technology can be used on a large scale, it is possible to reshape the current way of generating electricity from humans, and obtain energy from space and transmit it to all parts of the world without relying on large-scale power networks. .
